For many years Pan American World Airways provided exclusive airport membership lounges around the world known as The Clipper Club. At first membership was by invitation-only, based on a potential customer’s international travel. In later years membership was opened up to the public for a $1,000 fee. The Clipper Clubs offered customers comfortable seating and drink service away from the boarding gates. Everything about Clipper Class was designed to make frequent flying business travelers feel special, and in the 1950s specially-designed whiskey/rocks glasses were introduced in the clubs.
